As pigeons walk our streets and sidewalks looking for food, their feet can become entangled in stray hair, threads, strings, and hair nets. The pigeon is unable to remove the string, which progressively tightens around their feet and toes, cutting deeply into their flesh and cutting off blood supply, causing swelling, necrosis, amputation, and sometimes death. Although the pain is significant, the stringfoot pigeon must continue to walk on the food every day or face starvation or the starvation of their babies.
Caught early, string can be easily removed from a pigeon's foot, sparing them from such pain and injury. More severe injuries may require more intensive care, but the relief experienced by a pigeon is almost immediate.
